S. Rama RAO has worked in the field of International Intellectual Property Law, Public Health, Bilateral Investment Protection, International Environment Law, Sustainable Development, Technology and Innovation, particularly with reference to Foreign Investments, Intellectual Property, Technology and Arbitration matters over a span of 45 years.
His specialization includes International Law, Law of International Institutions, Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Court, International Law on Terrorism, and Law of the Sea. He was an active member of the International Law Association, India. He has excellent contacts with governments, diplomats, industry, professional organizations, civil society and academics in his long and brilliant career with administrative and management, diplomatic and academic experience.
He obtained his LL.B (university 1st), Gold Medalist, LL.M (university 1st) from Andhra University and PhD in International Law from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1980.
He started his professional career as an Assistant Professor at the Advanced Center for Legal Studies, University of Madras in 1976. Then, he shifted his professional career from the academic to civil society in 1982 and he joined the Ministry of External Affairs, India as a Director (Legal) and he rose to become the Chief Legal Advisor, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.
Furthermore, he started his international professional career at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as a Counselor in 1998 and he rose to become the Director/Senior Advisor of WIPO.
He is a Senior Advisor at IDLO, United Nations and he is also an adjunct Professor at School of Law, Pace University and Columbia University. Now, he is the Chair of the IPDP – Intellectual Property Development Program at New York, USA.
